What to protect an Arsenal collection with, and when

Match the protection to what the card is for. Over-protecting a common costs money; under-protecting a keeper costs a grade.

Penny sleeve first, always Nothing goes into a toploader or a one-touch un-sleeved. The sleeve is what stops the holder itself scuffing the surface during insertion and handling.
Toploaders for transit and bulk keepers Rigid, cheap and stackable. The standard choice for anything being posted, and for cards you want protected but are not planning to display.
One-touch magnetics for the display cards Screw-down and magnetic holders are for the cards you actually look at. Match the point thickness to the card — thick stock cards need a thicker holder.
Semi-rigids for grading submissions Graders require cards submitted in semi-rigid holders rather than toploaders. If a submission is on the horizon, buy these before you need them.
Stickers are a different problem Panini and Merlin album stickers are thinner, often unbacked and far more fragile than cardboard. Unpasted survivors are the scarce ones — store them flat and out of light rather than in a binder under pressure.

Penny sleeves and toploaders cover almost everything. Sleeve first, then the toploader — the sleeve is what protects the surface during insertion. How should I store Panini or Merlin stickers?
Differently from cards. Album stickers are thinner and more fragile than cardboard, and unpasted survivors are the scarce ones, so keep them flat, out of direct light and out of any binder that puts sustained pressure on them. Their condition is a large part of what the market is paying for.
Do toploaders work for grading submissions?
No. Grading companies require cards to arrive in semi-rigid holders, not toploaders, because semi-rigids can be opened without flexing the card. Buy them ahead of a submission rather than on the day.
